What an amazing day in the beeyard! We inspected Esther, Sunny, Miriel and Bronwyn. All are doing well except Bronwyn (still no queen). We fully intended to start pulling honey frames today. We tested the 3 large hives, and they still have a bit to much moisture for extracting. It might be a few more weeks before we have honey. However, were totally surprised to find queens in the same 3 hives, since they were all queenless 3 weeks ago. We'd like to introduce you to Summer. We are still trying to come up with names for the other 2 queens and we think we need a new name for the Bronwyn hive (since they can't seem to keep a queen).

Checked Bronwyn today. She is actively laying, but needs a bit of a boost. I think we will give her a few frames of brood from our abundant hives to help her out.

Well, we've done it! We split 2 of our overwintered hives! We are now an Apiary of 7 hives. 🙂 We will need to name the splits once they raise up a new queen. We are open to suggestions. We are looking for names that are strong of character and powerful.

Great capture of an orientation flight! Lots of baby bees in Tauriel's hive and they all decided to take their orientation flight just as we were making our exit. An orientation flight is how the bee figures out where home is. They will fly up and over the hive in big arching circles and take in everything that is around them. This way when they are returning to the hive, they know exactly where home is!!

Today's hive inspections went well. Still waiting on queen cells to hatch in Merida's old colony. We should see those hatch sometime this week. Tauriel is doing great. She is turning into a great, beautiful queen. Here is a short video of Queen T!
